@Xu Originally, all materials were freely accessible and I was aiming for industry users and sponsors to help me keep it that way. Unfortunately,this did not work and I had to resort to some sort of membership fee to be able to cover development and hosting expenses as until recently I myself have covered all expenses.

However, I have EDUcational option with which full access is granted to individual students and researchers that can not pay for the access to the data.

This is a good question and one of the principal reasons why I insist only on published sources. Also, at the moment only metallic materials and their mechanical properties are included in the database since this is the main field of my work.

Very likely option is including additional "sub" databases (for example polymers, wood, nanomaterials or some other features and properties of metals etc.) but for this, cooperation with someone who is expert in these individual areas is required. I hope that MATDATcom will grow in this direction and function as a platform for recovering and sharing published material data.

Thank you for the references and the websites that you mention. However, commercial sites in most cases contain only "mainstream" and general material properties (and these are very often presented in a simplified manner) and only rarely more complex ones.

Motivating community to take part is important because no matter how much effort and time I myself put into this, my possibilities are limited. On the other hand, if more people contributed just a couple of datasets each,... well I guess you understand what I mean.

In fact, one of the most important things that I want to achieve is to "uncover" and "rediscover" information from older references which exist only in paper form and are buried in libraries everywhere.

Jan, thank you for your suggestions and taking the time to share them.

Your suggestions are very concrete and I will definitely try to implement them in future features. In fact, I am glad because they are very compatible with some of the features that I plan to develop and implement soon.

Database itself is only the first step (perhaps the most practical) in the whole story. What I plan to do is also include support for more complex models of material behaviour, option to export data into FEA software etc.

I am in a process of purchasing and implementing a software component that will enable users to dinamically create graphs of the database content.

Would you be interested in staying in contact and perhaps take part in the project at some point?

Good news - MATDAT database is now FREE for all Universities and Faculties - for all students and employees.

MATDAT.COM http://www.matdat.com/ is a university-based project, and since it's beginning, one of the main ideas behind it was to collect published material data and make it freely available to the academic community. Recent developments have finally enabled me to accomplish this goal of making MATDAT database freely available to students and universities.

The only two prerequisites are signing a License Agreement (since MATDAT database is protected by intellectual property rights) and assigning one person to help forwarding occasional e-mail information to employees and students (usually at the beginning of new academic year).
