My questions revolves around the request of articles and the receipt of those articles. The scientists that send me their articles are not in my circle of friends so to speak. When I get these requested articles; I would very much like to respond, but it says that since they don't follow me I am unable to. I understand that recently there have been some spam accounts and I am sure that this is a response to that. Would someone please enlighten me on how I can message these individuals?

If you're using the browser, rather than the app, you will normally get a Popup window that asks if you want to say thanks. It has an edit-able message in it. Unless they changed that recently.
It does say that, but since the individuals don't follow me it won't go through.
