Ecological systems theory is useful in investigating the complex system of relationship of a child i.e. immediate setting/family, school, cultural values, laws, customs etc. The use of ecological model can enable a holistic understanding of the issues in safety investigation therefore can strengthen decisions around interventions. Attachment theory is also popular with social workers.
There are however many social workers involved in providing clinical services to support dysfunctional families, youths with psychological distress and/or challenging behavior - all of which may involve child protection or safety protocols. For these social work practitioners, psychotherapy approaches (i.e. counselling) being used are usually rooted in psychodynamic, social cognitive and humanistic theories.
