Sacredness, transcendence and the supernatural have frequently been used indistinctly in the social sciences. For instance, sometimes the sacred is supposed to be transcendent, other times the supernatural is taken as the transcendent. These three concepts are used in confusing or unclear ways, a situation which should not be acceptable in scientific vocabulary. Each concept should be a distinct analytic category.
