I feel the most GIS/RS applications are in Civil Engineering. Hence look for a good problem in such an area where you are confident enough to solve. Then such a solution should need spatial data such as soil, slopes, land cover, water table etc. Further such info needs to be processed to get the results.
An example is thinking about how much water you must cultivate in a dry zone in a geographical area. Then you have to think about where you take water and how much water you required etc... there you use all GIS/RS

Currently working with these applications in civil engineering career. My research is aimed at analyzing the changes in the land use and land cover in areas affected by engineering infrastructures (hydroelectric, oil platform, highways, etc.). I do this as an assessment of the environmental impact caused by these infrastructures.

There are various applications in civil engineering such as traffic transport, hydrology, mining, survey and mapping, structural engineering, environmental engineering etc. you can choose one according to your interesting. Try to address a current issue in your area of interest. As a simple example: the effect of agrochemicals on groundwater usage in a specific area. You can analysis heavy metals in water samples in a different location, then the polluted area can be mapped. You can correlate more variables to such a study such as population density, the extent of different crops, level of the groundwater, distribution of industries etc. This kind of study relates to Environmental Engineering.
