as a point of view, all the groups that you mentioned are very futuristic and excellent to prepare human resources, but as a personal intresting topic I may recommend: sutstainable agriculture and natural resources managment as basic of rural development, and specific topic that I intrested is: identification of optimized possiblity of conservation agriculture on arid zones for strategic products. with the major aim of utilization of natural resources with conservation to produce food for reduction of poverty.

This could be a crazy idea but something I see very futuristic could be the study of environmental impacts of going into space.

That too a great idea for the policy based research 

These days climate change and water quality are the biggest concerns for most of the countries. So, from my point of view, selecting a topic related to climate change and water quality could be more futuristic for your student. 

I think you should focus your research on how to assess the impact of climate change on ecological processes.
