Definitely, research is synonym for science, but new trends are very dangerous. Today science and business are too closely intermingled and because of that many scientists are not independent. They very often do not follow facts.
In many cases research just for publishing some low quality paper in some very low quality journal just to get a research grant from govt and get promotion or fulfilling criteria to become prof,lecturer , etc.etc. Real and Good worker, devoted researcher are few , they are for finding facts and they are only contributing to science and helping in the development of the science. We are progressing for those good and real researcher

In my opinion it is both. It should aim to discover new ideas and concepts, but it is important that research should lead to an outcome which can address problems in the community/society. Industry outcome should be emphasized. This will also help in getting grants for solving many problems that currently plague the society. It will involve time and energy too, but will help in finding a solution.
