The USForest Service and States developed best management practices for forestry that helped address soil erosion and water quality. Other BMPs were developed by other agencies to address agriculture, highways, etc. Monitoring efforts and appropriate forms were developed to determine if BMPs were implemented, effective and valid for their purposes. When I get to my computer files, maybe I can find a few examples of the monitoring forms we used. I know the USFS developed an agency pamphlet on soil monitoring and sampling techniques when evaluating activities as timber sales, roads, skid roads, log landings, etc. If you have access to LiDAR coverage, it can be very useful in identifying past activities and erosion indicators as gullies, especially in terrain with vegetation coverage. Soil scientists are also helpful as they are used to looking for and evaluating the uneroded or reference soil conditions, which can be useful when comparing to various activities and historical land uses. As far as interviews, some are more familiar with or knowledgeable of erosion and its effects than others. One example from years back, we had one individual public respondent who thought gullies and eroded barrens were pretty and would more or less like to see them preserved.

We worked on the use of the fallout radionuclides technique to assess the impact of climate change and agricultural practices on soil erosion and dams' sedimentation in Northwest Morocco. When I went to the investigated fields from time to time to get information from the owners of the fields or the local farmers, I was used to ask about land use history, mainly the crops used in the fields and if there had been any changes in the cropping system. If there were any changes, when (at which period) and why ? Getting information about the plowing material is also important as it was the case in some of our fields where traditional cropping was used for a certain period then, soon after some sophisticated material were introduced and this of course impacts soil loss because the plough layer becomes deeper. Moreover, I was also taking notes in my notebook about the agricultural practices in those fields like in our case, the local farmers are used to let their lands go under fallow after each harvest and alternate between cereals and legumes...
