I have observed over time a relationship between the quality of music one prefers and the intelligence level of the person. There seems to very frequently encounter high intelligence associated with people who show preference for classical or serious music. On the contrary, people with lower IQ are very often associated with hip-pop and what is called unserious music. Could this really be true? What are the major drivers for this seeming association/relationship?

It depends how the intelligence test looks like. I am not sure that intelligence is universally defined or even definable. Some people may be good in one things, others in other things.
IQ has a great effect on music processing and facilitates the understanding of different elements of music, but preferred music style is more related to culture and personality than IQ. For example, in some of our researches, slow-paced music in Introvert / BIS healthy participants and also coronary and hypertensive patients decreased cardiovascular responses such as heart rate and blood pressure (as a healthy responses), while fast-paced music in Extrovert / BAS participants induced the same responses.
