i am assign to make a written report regarding the real life applications of different sampling designs such as simple random sampling with and without replacement, systematic sampling, stratified random sampling and cluster sampling.. Well, at the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), although many people look for information online without bothering (unfortunately) to examine the technical notes that were in the old hardcopy reports that used to be printed, those reports are still actually produced online, and you can still find information on the sample designs used for the various surveys if you look in the appendices and elsewhere for 'technical notes,' 'explanatory notes,' and 'statistical notes.' There the sample designs and estimation procedures are described for various surveys. I am fairly certain that the US Bureau of the Census and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and likely others around the world, for various nations Official Statistics, likely do the same thing. You may find it disappointing, as I always have, however, that in the so-called 'real world,' what is done is often far short of what should be done. Some surveys are not too bad, however. But there are a great many considerations, such as nonsampling error, that can impact the effectiveness of whatever is done, and not everything is done as rigorously as it should be done. Often information is reported with no standard error estimates or much if any other data quality or metadata type of information.
Also, note that at the EIA and in other agencies, some designs are not 'design-based' sampling, but model-based sampling.
In fact, for survey sampling (and estimation), there are three major approaches: (1) design-based (probability) methodologies, (2) model-based (regression) methodologies, and (3) model-assisted design-based methodologies. Note that in the first and third cases in particular, certain sample designs put restrictions on what estimation methodologies can go with them. In the case of strictly model-based methodologies, stratification to model only data that belong under the same model in each stratum is very important.
Attached are links to get you started. All have to do with the EIA as it is an agency in which I worked. The first two are from specific publications - one for natural gas and one for electricity, and the third is a paper I wrote on using ratio estimations of various types for a number of surveys. Links to the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB), at the end of the paper in the fourth link below, are actually examples of reports to OMB to obtain clearance to collect (continue to collect) surveys. The survey sample designs and estimation procedures have to be explained to the OMB before that agency gives permission to collect data, and that permission has to be renewed periodically.
