What happens to the benthos pumping activities in an intertidal area once the tide has receded? Do they stop pumping inside their burrows? is the water drained off the burrow?
Various intertidal bivalves, like the razor clams (Siliqua patula) or geoducks (Panopea generosa) for example, will continue pumping water as long as their burrow remains flooded. Once the tide drops and there is no longer interstitial water available in their burrows they close up and wait for the tide to return. Here is a nice example of it:
