Incidence of impaired vision is increasing both in children and adults. About 80% of impaired vision is due to cataract. Corticosteroids use (either topical /systemic) is one of the causes of early development of cataracts. As a medical practitioner every now and then I see prescriptions of topical corticosteroids in cases where it is not indicated at all. Sometimes patient uses topical corticosteroids without prescriptions as a skin whitening agent. All these are added risk of developing early cataracts. Rational uses of topical corticosteroids might reduce the risk.
