Plastic waste is discarded at the end of its useful life and becomes part of the global problem of solid waste disposal. Its use in the construction of paving slabs to reduce waste and consumption of primary materials and related impacts is of considerable interest in the infrastructure industry. The road surface is under increasing public pressure to mitigate the negative impact on the environment. In this regard, there is a need for a meaningful method of recycling plastic waste. This study examines the economic, environmental and other benefits of using plastic waste in the construction of sidewalks. Plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, low density polyethylene and high density polyethylene have been studied. As a research methodology, he used a review of published literature, a search through Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science and Research Gate. The results show the expediency of using plastic waste in the construction of road surfaces to increase environmental friendliness and efficiency. However, it requires technical improvements. Tests show that adding a small amount of plastic waste to the paving mix leads to an increase in compressive strength and other important characteristics. The crystalline phase of polyethylene in the composition of paving slabs makes it possible to improve moisture resistance and adhesive properties, as well as increase thermal characteristics without increasing costs. The use of plastic waste in the construction of paving slabs will lead to a reduction in landfills in Kazakhstan. The materials can be used on sidewalks for pedestrians, as well as on bike paths. It can also contribute to improving the sustainability and quality of road construction.
