my first question would be, which energy has the radiation you want to absorb. The second would be for what you want to use the absorbed energy. If you want to use light energy and transfer it to electrical energy (as an example) then Pb is the worst choice.

I assume, you want to absorb high energy particle radiation (alfa, beta and gamma radiation). It is known that Pb screens very well. this radioactive radiation. This is expresssed by the so called mass absorbtion coefficient (depends strongly on energy). But this means, that the absorbtion is refered to the mass unit. If you want to have a certain absorbtion then you need the lowest mass of all elements if you select Pb. So it could be that a thin Pb layer has a higher effect then a thick aluminium layer. Therefore a compound material probably gives the best effect of screening.

let me give a small supplement.

First, I must give a more precise formulation: The mass attenuation coefficient corresponds to the absorption coefficient related the mass density (not mass).

Second, this gives in the case of gamma radiation comparable values for different elements. As an example:

Al(1 MeV): 6,15E-2 cm²/g

Pb(1 MeV): 7,1E-2 cm²/g

The values can found in published tables.

This field of science is just a hobby for me, so please be patient with me :)

I just like to think about new developments etc...

For me the main problem is the cosmic radiation.

I am not sure about the radiaton wave lenghts. I mean .. from gamma to radio .. I think. Lets just absorbe the radiation under visible.
