The thi-1 designation means that CC118 requires thiamine supplementation and therefore can't grow on minimal medium (http://www.promega.com/~/media/Files/Resources/Technical%20References/Genetic%20Markers%20of%20%20E%20Coli.pdf?utm_campaign=genomic-essentials&utm_medium=vanity&utm_source=url_genetic-markers). Most eutropha strains I've worked with will grow just fine on minimal medium using simple carbon compounds like glucose. While formate and hydrogen should work, my experience has been that the yield is lower and the growth is slower on these compounds.
If the genotype for CC118 you write is correct, then the strain should also be an arginine auxotroph, so using minimal medium lacking both should be a clean selection.
