Here is a proposed linear transect more or less 800 km long from south to north comprising 100 points on equal interval for tectonic deformation and stress analysis. Proposed work plan is as under:
1. 100 samples (1 sample/point)
2. 100 thin-sections (1 thin-section/point))
3. 100 samples for geochemical analysis/petrogenesis (1 sample/point)
4. 100 observations from remote sensing data

Depends upon the region. A rigid plan for geologic testing needs to be proofed through remote sensing or topographic maps first to make sure that the testing points A) do not miss anomalous features, and B) provides a statistical sampling of the terrain. If the 100 points fail to meet the desired criteria, then they can be shifted until they do. This is usually fairly easy using GIS.
Nature tends not to conform to the plans of man.
It all depends, In the complex structere like Carpathians in Poland it is not enough.

I agree completely with James. Geology is not smoothly distributed over an 800 km stretch. For sampling, your points will be determined by what obtains. A long monotonous stretch will require wide sampling points while close sampling will be necessary where there are much variations. For example at boundary locations one might run close sampling to be able to find much information.For geochemical analysis and petrography, closer sampling points may be required although that again depends on the variations in lithology. A pre determined one sample per 8km distance may not be proper.
