-How do lithium metal and other solid metal batteries work if there is no potential between the electrodes?
-What role exactly does the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) play in the operation of the battery? Does it have any other roles besides mitigating dendrite formation and transferring ions?
-Any good reviews on the state of artificial, mechanically stable, SEIs for LMBs?
-Is infinite volume change only a problem because it means the cathode is very likely to develop dendrites or are there other issues with this?
-Why are polymeric electrolytes advantageous in LMBs?
-What is Coulombic efficiency and why does it have to be increased from 99.8% to 99.9%?
In recent times, there is an intense contest about the aging[1] of the related electrode surfaces in lithium-ion batteries, due to an "electrodes' corrosion" thin film(s) formation, the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). In spite of the numerous related research efforts[2-6], details on the stability of the SEI composition and its influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. So, read some newborn (lithium-ion batteries) books[2].
1. The presence of the film plays an essential role in the battery performance, and its nature can determine an extended (or shorter) life for the battery; it is like an electrodes' "carcinoma" in thin film(s) form.

Ive been thinking about directions to research in materials engineering for LMB, so I read a lot of papers on the materials used. Couldn't find any sources of knowledge for the basic working principles on LMB. These were just some questions I couldn't figure out from the papers. This was helpful though, next time I need to understand the theory behind a new field, start with textbooks then move to papers. Thank you all for your kind responses, I have some reading to do.
