No, you cannot do a correlation since 'type of resource' does not increase or decrease as the index changes. An ANOVA may be more suitable :)

Yes. Off course! Provided you already know how to present (code) your categorical data in form of numeric ones. This will purely depend on what your intuition is about the data.

Andrew i should say that my continuous variable is a composite index (of regional development) and my categorical variable is still "resources" like forests etc.does this make any change to your opinion about ANOVA?

The categorical items are nominal scale and have no quantitative value. The index appears to be either interval or ratio scale, not very clear! Nonetheless, maybe you try rank correlation but you still need a way of coding the resources into some sort of ordinal scale.

Albert actually the categorical variable, which is the dependent one, could be called "resources" but on second thought taking every category of resources independently like observing how much percentage of forest resources prevails in the landscape as "continuous variables" and correlating them with the regional composite development index, which comprises a set of 17 variables with scoring of 1-5 that belong to the four dimensions of development, as also a continuous variable should be able to be correlated if it is really justified. since i have not encountered any other relevant indicator of regional development that is so holistic i believe that the latter one deserves correlation

any opinion or judgement for these statement will be appreciated..

This kind of correlation is very much possible to happen and can be studied. But the data will be meaningful only if it is taken for a longer time frame.
