I am currently conducting a study examining the moderating effect of age on the relationship between my independent variable and dependent variable. Both my IV and age have two levels (younger group vs. older group), creating a 2×2 design.

Based on G*Power calculations (effect size = 0.25, power = 0.8, α = 0.05), I determined that I need 128 total participants (32 per group). However, since age is a measured variable that I cannot manipulate, my groups are severely imbalanced. My current sample includes 511 participants distributed as follows: 243, 15, 230, and 23 across the four groups. The older group has only 38 participants total.

My results show that the age moderation effect is significant, and subgroup regression analyses indicate that the IV effect is significant only in the older group.

My question is: Does this sample imbalance make my results unreliable? If so, what remedial approaches would you recommend?
