Hi guys! Recently I have been trying to buying centrifugal pump with a vendor. And one question I wanna ask is that because I'm gonna use accelerometer probe and RTD in the bearing part of the pump and Vendor proposed to use accelerometer and RTD in accordance with "manufacturer standard". Because I don't have to much knowledge about those instrument and I'm not sure whether these so called "manufacturer standard" is reliable or not, is there like any international standard or specification for accelerometer and RTD to be designed and followed ? I've tried to google some related standard but it seems like there is not one for these instruments.

Hi Che, it sounds a little like they are concerned about the manufacture of the pump & bearings rather than the RTD and accelerometer, and worried that it my degrade them in some way, weaken the structure etc. I have not heard of any such standards, particularly as accelerators are actually quite a "recent" development.

Another way to look at the comments made by the Manufacturer about the "manufacturing standards" is that how are you (Che) as the customer and user going to fit the RTD sensor and accelerometer to the centrifugal pump? That is where the manufacturing standard comes - first it violates the warranty as you would be tampering with the instrument/equipment and secondly, the pump (for sure) might not have been designed to accommodate any dust (or for that matter the heavier RTD sensors and accelerometer boards) as load to it.
May be you can elaborate your exact need and you might get some better insight as how to achieve your goals!

I have used many different motors with embedded RTDs and mounted acccelerometer sensors. Their primary use is to determine the operational status of the bearings. In that respect, you are not really concerned with high accuracy readings, you are concerned with deviations from a baseline value. Because of that you can usually get away with "manufacturing standards" such as 0.5 C accuracy for the RTD and 2-3 Hz for the acccelerometer. You are not concerned with small changes. A bearing that is in the process of failing would result in 10-20 C temperature rise and a significant shift in vibration frequency.
Another thing to consider is the size of the pump and motor. If the motor is less than 5 Kw I wouldn't bother with the sensors. Replacing the motor or pump would be less expensive than incorporating the sensors and associated instrumentation. If it was between 5-25 Kw, I would evaluate the criticality of the function. If it is not a critical function or if you can accept the downtime required to replace the pump then I wouldn't bother. I have had motors in excess of 300 Kw in extreme environments that did not incorporate sensors but for those I would monitor then periodically with hand held test equipment.
