Good question Dr. Kumar. Gross sown area is the area sown more than once in an agricultural year plus net sown area , which is the total area sown with crops in a country. So, for example, if you have a 1 acre field, you have a net sown area of 1 acre (if and when it is sown). If it is sown 3 times in a year, then you have a gross crop area of 3 acres. It is sure, with the availability of irrigation water , more technical know-how and availability of short duration cultivar , the cropping intensity is rising consistently.
