I would have to disagree with the above, I would not recommend using H2. In general nitrogen or even argon are recommended in aqueous electrochemical systems to remove dissolved oxygen, as they are essentially inert gases both chemically and electrochemically and are heavy enough to easily displace oxygen.

For the measurement of HER kinetics, you would anyways have to saturate the electrolyte with H2 to have a constant backpressure. The reason is the following: the potential of your working electrode undergoes a Nernst-shift depending on the H2-partial pressure (p(H2)) in its vicinity. Doing HER in Ar-saturated electrolyte means that you continuously enrich the electrolyte with H2 and therefrom get a varying Nernst-shift (-30mV per decade of p(H2)). To correct for this shift, you would have to model the fluid-dynamics and H2-diffusion in the electrolyte, so almost impossible.

As a consequence I recommend to measure HER under H2-saturated condition. As for deaerating, you can of course flush intermediately with N2 or Ar, if you have the impression that it is faster.

It depends on what you want to observe from your experiment I think. Without purging hydrogen, you cannot obtain a good value (electrode potential vs. ref) on your testing electrode. Purging N2/Ar, the inert gas, is for removing the dissolved oxygen and limited amount of water (if in non-aqueous system). It is good for you to compare this two cases.
