The number of (online) journals is increasing rapidly. Some have print and digital issues. Some are open-access while others have subscription policy or are access-restricted. However, they differ in the fees they charge for publication as they range from free to more than 1,000 US$ to publish one article!
What are the criteria of choosing a journal in which to publish! Journal reputation? Affiliation to a known publishing house? Impact index? Or high fees?

I prefer to publish in print journals, rather than those that charge a fee. I am an Associate Editor for a high impact factor Public health journal which charges over $2,500 per article but it is genuine journal with high quality peer-review process. I have only published in this journal twice. However, I am very careful and diligent in avoiding predatory journals.
Journals that are not open access should be free for authors. If you want the open access option, they usually charge quite a lot and I would only consider using this option if I had a chance to get funding for the publication. Some universities offer funding opportunities for open access, as far as I know.
The first criterion to choose a Journal for publication should be that it fits your research interest and the topic of your article in order to reach the readership you want to recognize your research. Then, impact is also worth considering. You should also check the services they offer to authors on their webpage and the copyright agreements.

Dear researchers, publish your articles in free magazines, why bother.
Criteria of selecting an appropriate journal could depend on multiple factors/characteristics of the target journal. For example, peer-review policy, reputation of journal and/or publisher, readership, age, rank, processing time, author fee and so on. These parameters could also be changed based on whether the target journal is open-access or fee-based. Therefore, my own opinion is that we cannot compare the above mentioned variables across open-access and fee-based journals. Moreover, the choice of an appropriate journal based on above factors depends on the discipline of the journal, because these factors could significantly vary between two distinct areas. For example impact factor of medicine journals usually higher than the journals in social sciences. I prefer to publish in free open access journals, because they cost nothing and you don't waste your money on expensive magazines that exploit and abuse researchers to publish the articles.
Don’t judge a journal by its cover or name. There are no bad or good magazines, what matters is the quality of the scientific article and the content. Long live freedom of expression.
