The Schistosomal Research Project determined the prevalence of both types of schistosmiasis in Egypt, by the mid of 1990s, In 1996, 168 villages had S. mansoni prevalence >30%, 324 villages 20–30% and 654 villages 10–20%. In 1997, the National Schistosomal Control program adopted a strategic plan to decrease the prevalence of the disease. By the end of 2010, in the whole country only 29 villages had prevalence >3% and none had more than 10%.
