There are a few key points that you need to keep in when trying to move from a small-scale experiment to a large production scale:

1) What is technically feasible in the small-scale experiment doesn't necessarily mean that the process will be economically feasible on a production scale.

2) Scaling up challenges typically appear when you move from a small-scale experiment to a large production scale.

3) Presence of side reactions is problematic and would reduce the overall efficiency of the process.

4) SO2 is typicall removed from flue gases via the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process where SO2 is converted to CaSO3 and CaSO4 (which is called sypsum). Hence, you need to collect SO2 in gaseous form in order to reduce it to elemental sulfur.

The best way to reduce SOx in flue gas is to remove S from the fuel. But as Prof Khalil points out Ca Co3 is the preferred agent to scrub flue gas.  Here is a link to some typical commercial lue gas scrubber design information..

It is a side reaction in the Claus process, but also can occur without H2S by using red hot carbon solid. The result is CO2 and  CS2 but reversible and not to completion unless CS2 is removed. Also you can get some CO and carbon dust anywhere in the process fouling pipes and damaging instruments. Beware of heat, flame, toxic effects, corrosion and erosion.

Beware that sulfur removes carbon from ordinary steel making it weak. Soft steel might be used with low carbon.

I prefer to scrub with urea solution and make urea sulfate fertilizer if other toxic agents are not present. It requires protection from corrosion and a market for the product.
