With the development of more scientific and medical journals online and the push for Open Access so that researchers, regardless of their institutional support and income, have access to the published results. This is important, really critical, so that all scientists can understand what is known and therefore conduct better and more appropriate research. That those of us from ‘richer’ countries also bear more of the cost of publishing, it helps researchers from developing countries have lower constraints on getting published. On the negative side, there has been a huge increase in the number of ‘journal’ publishers that pretend to have quality journals that are peer reviewed, have high impact factors, and have ‘good visibility’ for the researchers and yet none of these are true. These journals only seem interested in receiving the Article Processing Charge (APC) and often add additional ‘fees’ they charge the authors, and they often seem to do zero peer review and often no editing. These are now referred to as ‘Predatory.’ For young and experienced authors, if you receive an article back that is accepted with little or no suggestions for improvements, it is probably a predatory journal. RUN away from it, and do NOT pay even if they publish it (which they often do, even without your permission)! Many articles are so poorly written and edited that they do not even make any sense when read.
What I want with this ‘question’ is to enable a discussion of what those of you on ResearchGate have experienced, good or bad, with these publishers. Call out the predatory publishers and let’s see if we can provide better ‘science’ for the public. The links below are to the best list and commentary on the subject.
Oh - and be careful as many of them are now offering "conferences" which are also a scam to collect extra money from naïve researchers.
