I have read about such an instrument few years ago, most likely in Journal of Magnetic Resonance (no warranty however). Big, heavy and power hungry electromagnet was replaced there by two concentric Halbach arrays made from permanent magnets. The field inside the working area is uniform, as it should be, and its strength is easily controlled by reorienting of both arrays.
