I am working on Heavy Fuel Oil droplet evaporation. Since the evaporation process occurs in elevated temperature, it is necessary to take into account the effects of Polymerization and Pyrolysis reactions. Do you have any idea if there would be an approach to find the chemical reaction paths and reaction rate constants for such a multi-component fuel?

Dear Mohamad Asrardel, I have assisted many similar projects during my graduate and post-graduate studies at the Algerian Institute of Petroleum - Engineers School of Boumerdes - Algeria.
I would like to bring the following notes:
- for the crude oil, only very low molecular weight (MW) fractions will evaporate, but it accounts for a very low percentage.
- since you are dealing with heavy oil, most fractions are of high MW, these will not evaporate easily unless subjected to cracking
- pyrolysis is a complexe process regarding the number of parameters involved, inert/open atmosphere, catalyst type and loading, pressure, mass load, ....
- pyrolysis major products are wax and to lower extent oily and sometimes resinous substances, and of course char.

The problem that I am dealing with is on evaporation of a single isolated heavy fuel oil (HFO) droplet in a high temperature atmosphere (a simplified spray condition). In order to improve the precision of evaporation rate prediction, the mass lost due to Polymerization and Pyrolysis should be taken into account. There are few works in the literature that those masses lost were simply calculated based on the Aromaticity of fuel and considering the two following conditions:
1. Only the high molecule-weight components (MWi >= 350) in the Fuel oil droplet start to Pyrolysis form volatile gases when the droplet temperature reaches 700 K.
2. Only the high molecule-weight components (MWi >= 350) in the oil droplet start polymerizing when the droplet temperature is higher than 840 K.
With all that being said, I was wondering that if there would be any more comprehensive model for emulating the HFO polymerization and Pyrolysis while fuel droplet evaporating.
