In most of the literature maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene is used as copolymer and very few has used Poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) as nomenclature for copolymer. Moreover, they both have different price range on Sigma Aldrich site with same CAS number so I am bit confused and looking for clarification.
Dear Anam Khan, chain architecture is not the same, in addition to the synthesis process. Alternated copolymers are directly prepared via polymerization, whereas, graft copolymers are produced via post-polymerization modification of polyethylene by MAh grafting. So, for the alt-copolymer, both monomers are located in sequence in the main backbone, contrary to the graft copolymer, the main backbone is solely constituted of repeated ethylene (or methylene) sequences, and MAh unit located pendent in the side of chains. For sure yes, properties are always related to structure, i.e., different structures implies distinct properties.
Many studies were conducted to this issue. Usually, there is an optimal ratio for maximum compayibility. There are many other parameters that should be considered such as MW and MWD. I think you will get an insight by doing bibliographic search. Good Luck in your work
Something else to keep in mind is that for food grade/food contact applications such as food packaging, there is a maximum maleic anhydride content of 2% by weight as specified in the US Code of Federal Regulations 21CFR177.1520.
The Poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) that I am aware of contains 50% maleic anhydride (by volume?) and is an alternating ethyl/MaH structure.
