Hi,

What you might want to do is to get the frequency of each of the 10 crops in your population, a simple pivot table in excel will do that, then just plot them as barchart, crop types in x axis and frequency in y-axis. The frequency can also be converted to % by dividing it by 50 (total number of farmers).

Thank you for this suggestion. I will try to extract the data in excel and try that! My only worry is that the percentage is represented as A/500 x 100 instead of A/50x100. So i thought there could be a better way of presenting such data.

Dear Difo,

There were 160 crops and 50 farmers where, each farmer performed a random selection of 10 crops. To represent the selection of each crop in terms of total number of farmers (50), you need a frequency distribution table.

You have to first draw a table and set the 160 crops against the 50 farmers. From the table, you will obtain the number of farmers per crop for each of the 160 crops.You will observe a variability in farmer distribution per crop, use excel to plot your chart or graph.

You can choose spike graph by setting max Y axis at 160 & you'll find better result.

Prefer Eviews software & and if any problem in handling watch spike charts in eviews videos on YouTube.

Eviews is not a free software, but if you want spike graph you can compute it by R-Studio which is a free software,

There are some other free softwares but I am not sure that they draw spike or not.

Free software like - gretL, Matrixer.

I am Finding the idea of Spike chart very interesting for these data. However, I am not able to get good details about it from the net or even youtube. have just read a bit about it and it sound very interesting. Please, could you send me some links and/OR some example of plots.

From the little a read, I am thinking of applying it this way and I find it very fantastic: Since i have 10 crops selected by each farmer and each farmer can have the same selection with another farmer on a total of 50 farmers, I can set a medium line or reference line to be 25 (i.e 50farmers/2) and this will mean that all crops that appears above the value 25 have been selected at least by half of the total number of farmers. I find this very nice. Please, Is this what you also have in mind while recommending spike plot. If not I plead for more intersting detail to ease my understanding!!
