Hello,
I would like to model on a yearly basis the performance of a thermal storage unit in conjunction with a solar thermal setup ? I would like recommendations for softwares, since I dont have much experience in this domain ?
1. Shall I simply code it into Matlab/C ? It wont be visual in this case ?
2. Are Modelica/Dymola etc good choices ? Are they opensource or do they need a license ?
3. Or is it more in an architectural domain ? Revit etc ?
Please advice.

1. I'm quite sure about PV panels, batteries (lead-acid), different kinds of heat pumps (need catalog data). About thermal storage, you can use water tanks if you are going to use water as storage media. you can use H2 tank for power to gas storage. PCM-based components are also developed by others and you can ask them for it.
2. There is an Academic version, But you should also pay for the academic version.
3.honestly, TRNSYS has limited tutorial sources. You can use the documentation provided by TRNSYS for help. I also recommend you to join trnsys .users. You can email your problems and questions about TRNSYS and experts would probably provide you the best answers.
4. It's better that you search your own research keywords and TRNSYS in ScienceDirect.

Dear Abdur,
Since your project consist of building demand, transient solar energy, and thermal storage, I would recommend your to use TRNSYS (Transient system simulation tool). Since it's a commercial software, it's easy to learn. BUT unfortunately it's not free.
Modeling with python and matlab is also possible but you have to be familiar with thermodynamic modeling using standard correlations. It's a bit hard if you are not familiar with the field.

Mehrdad Vojdani, a very insigtful article. The author uses a mathematical model of an equivalent electric ciruit in Matlab.
Also do you have such experience with visual softwares like Modelica, trnsys simulink etc ?
TRNSYS software will be useful in your research. I recommend it. TRNSYS is a simulation program used mainly in the fields of renewable energy engineering and the simulation of passive solar systems, as well as active solar design. TRNSYS is a commercial software package developed at the University of Wisconsin. One of its original uses was to perform the dynamic simulation of the behavior of a solar hot water system for a typical meteorological year so that the long-term cost savings of these systems can be verified.
Abdur Rehman Mazhar I have done a few projects with TRNSYS and also studied examples provided by TRNSYS.
Depending on the case, if the components that you want to model exists in TRNSYS libraries, you can learn how to use it by reading its description provided by its developer.
