Now a day we are very much worried about plastic waste, especially shopping bags. But it is only a fraction of crud oil. About 2 to 3% of crud oil is converted into plastic, while 97 to 98% is used in preparation of other petrochemicals. If this 3% us such a big threat, what about the huge part of crud oil? Although plastic is recyclable.
Not all types of plastics are recyclable. Only 2 kinds (resin) of plastics have the potential to be recycled. And shockingly, those two (Polypropylene and PET) are rarely accepted at recyclers.
Much of the plastic deposited in recycling bins does not get recycled. Currently, more than 300 million tons of new plastic is produced annually and less than 10% of it recycled.A whopping 91% of plastic is not recycled and this is because of the difficulty of sorting and collecting plastics. And making new plastics from crude is easier and cheaper than recycling.
Plastics cause a lot of environmental problems. If we recycle the plastics at present rate, there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfills.
The seas are unquestionably heavily polluted with plastic, as are some rivers and streams. The single-use plastics that take five seconds to produce, are used for five minutes, then take 500 years to break down again. For these reasons, plastic pollution is a great environmental concern

We can encourage recycling through economic measures by justifying the cost in terms of ecological service enhancement. I think, it will be better to talk about the non- recyclable plastic and discourage it's manufacturing. Sidewise, also think 🤔 about the impact of consumption of remaining 97% crude oil. Recycling of plastic wastes and composite wastes is the new dawn in any circular economy. Economic gains are also expected and with recycling, the use of landfills will be greatly minimised. Also, there will be more recycled products in the markets. For composite materials, some companies like Reprocover, ELG Carbon Fibre, Green Composites Technologies, etc are using recycled composites materials, biocomposites and plastics to produce new products. Both Glass Fibre and Carbon Fibre are not recycled at the same rate currently, because of issues with the available recycling technologies, material characterisation, sources of raw material, plant capacity for recycling, etc. Currently, there are also renewable composites materials also called recycled composite materials in use in the offshore industry. Some current applications of composite materials is on wind turbines and marine composite risers.
no we have to worry about the plastics fate because
most of them non biodegradable
without proper management the dump in to surroundings
it arrest water penetration to the soil
it arrest nutrient cycle
cattle, fishes and number of organism's stomach with full of plastics
soil degradation etc
The way forward for every serious economy now is to go by the reduce,recycle and reuse principle. Plastics have been managed poorly over the years, hence, growing concerns of plastic waste management bearing it's severe impacts....Not all plastics are recyclable just resins and polypropylene/PETs.
More research is needed to manage plastics generated annually. i side with @Sheikh M. if 300m+ are produced and less than 10% of them are recycled what happens to the remaining 90% bearing issues of sorting and management. it eventually ends up n the sea which would later harm other organisms and find its way to our bellies. innovative ways are needed to curb this..Post deposit refund, tackling pollution at source and so on are still not enough
