Do plants express sigma 1 receptors?
My question arises form the fact that certain plants produce n,n-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), an hallucinogenic compound that in humans and rodents binds to the sigma 1 receptor.
I cannot find any evidence that they do, therefore I am wondering: why would plants produce a compound that binds to a human receptor but they themselves do not have the receptor for this compound?
There might be other receptors in plants that this compound binds to, but I am not sure there is any evidence of this.
