I cannot answer your question regarding numbers as it depends on the maturity of the person. But I could turn your question around and ask how many physicians view the physician/patient as a partnership?
I was brought up in South Africa and certainly at that stage the relationship was considered more as a partnership (with physicians also welcoming that the person consult another specialist to get another opinion). However in Spain where I live now that attitude is not normal and does not seem to be very welcome! Which tell me a lot about the relationship.
The relationship must be viewed as a partnership or the relationship cannot work. Most physicians I've known have, even the best, assumed superior knowledge, often superior intellectual attributes, that have little connection to reality. I liken physicians to car mechanics-a much closer connection. I create such a relationship here in the UK (soon to be domiciled elsewhere) by going private. Money is a great equaliser!
Sorry Dennis, I think a great deal of medical knowledge is disputable. My research indicates flawed thinking and evaluation methods. If a doctor tells me he/she knows best I know I possibly going to have a lot of pain, remain unnecessarily ill or worse.
