Ph.D. or professional doctorate?
Yes, you can choose to do a PhD in computer science where you will be able to learn technologies and techniques and your application domain will be healthcare. What you learn in PhD, you can implement in the real world applications of medical domain. In fact, many scholars are doing this and I am one of them. My major is computer science and all my focus to apply AI techniques to medical applications.
A Ph.D. (should at least) train you as an "independent investigator" and a professional doctorate as a practitioner. The training to think in those domains are quite different. If you want to do science for a living, then there is no discussion, a Ph.D. is the only way to go. There is a reason that academia treats professional-level doctorates as masters level degrees.
