I am interested in doing a class to educate nurses how to assess spiritual distress and provide basic spiritual care to patients in the hospital. As part of the class wanted to have information regarding their practice and perspective. I have found the tools used in many research articles and was hoping to have permission to use them for the class and possibly for an article in the future.

I am happy to send and allow no cost use. The patient and nurse SHI instruments were standardized based on oncology nurse and patient literature and experiences. Others have used them with other populations. Let me know if you still think they are a "fit."
Some in Europe are doing excellent work on spiritual care standards in education, including Tove Giske, Rene vanLeeuwan, and Bart Cusveller.
There is also an excellent Spiritual Well Being Scale for self-assessment put together by Ellison and Paloutzian.

I recommend contacting Elizabeth Taylor who has updated the SPS. I'm sure she will grant permission and send the latest version of SPS. Are you still interested in SHI? And again, I think the SWBS is a great tool.
Good morning, Tammy! Do you have access to Chaplains? I serve as Manager of Spiritual Services in a regional medical and trauma center and we find many of the nurses rely on our team of Chaplains to provide spiritual care. There certainly is a need to provide the basics where Chaplains or local clergy are not available. We also have found many nurses are in need themselves of basic spiritual care. I recall the RN who was in tears when she was asked by parents to pray for their infant. It was something extremely uncomfortable for her and outside the scope of her training.
The older Fish & Shelly book on spiritual caregiving in Nursing has a wonderful table that describes when and why nursing versus chaplain services are of benefit.
Thanks, Martha. I'm not aware of it and I look forward to checking out Fish & Shelly. We certainly want to work alongside nurses and be a team in enriching the lives of our patients and their families also in their spiritual needs.
