Does anyone use a pen and pad instead of mouse with ImageJ? I want to draw round structures to do segmentation and think it will be easier to use a pen. I don't have a touch screen computer, so I am just talking about replacing the mouse with a pen and pad. Does anyone have experience with this and can recommend a pen which is compatible with ImageJ please? Many thanks,

There are a lot of pen and pad devices on the market - the price is at about 50 dollars. A few aspects can be of some importance. The drivers which come with the device should be compatible to your operating system (OS). The interface should be compatible and the most universal one would be USB. In most cases the pad will be added to your input devices installed, like mouse and touchpad. That means you plug in the pad and start drawing with your pen. ImageJ is a java based application which is not depending on the physical layer of input devices but on the OS defined logical layer, meaning there should be no constraints for the ImageJ software as long as the pad works for your OS.
As Frank Schmitz suggested, there are a lot of graphical design tools available. You can look for some graphical designing pads which might suit your budget and requirement. The price vary according to the sensitivity and added function. Most of them are compatible for all OS. Let me know if you find a good one with decent price, as I want one as well.
I agree with Frank and Abhijeet, there are a lot of good and affordable options out there that will be compatible with your computer and ImageJ. The computer sort of sees it as a really big mouse pad, and therefore, so does ImageJ. The hardware typically comes with drivers that will install upon first connection; should not need to install anything to use it with ImageJ.

I have also seen colleagues that use a stylus with the Windows Surface Pro or iPad to trace directly on the image. This is an obviously expensive solution unless you already have one of these products.

I can't say if Melissa's colleagues uses ImageJ on iPad, because I suspect if that can be done. iPad don't support java and ImageJ is a java program. So, there is no compatibility. Image manipulation via iPad using stylus is surely possible but not via ImageJ.
I suppose windows surface could be a choice. Personally I am not working on image analysis now, so not actively seeking for any solutions. However, i have worked a lot with ImageJ and I too felt a need of something easier. But, things take time and may be ImageJ developers with integrated something for it. There are many who are even trying with code development and implementation but it is not yet done.
So, what are the option available for you?
1. If you really want to to touch sensitive thing... you can go for Windows surface and you it as a normal touch sensitive computer while running ImageJ on it.
2. You can try to find some marcos which might automatize or might help in the analysis.
3. You can write your own macros for the analysis of your need.
4. As ImageJ is open source and community driven app, you ca also considering developing ImageJ for touch sensitivity.
