I am trying to make pellets, my material is similar to activated carbon. I added suitable binder in it and tried hand made pellets (spherical) and placed them into water. They showed good strength in water. But when i have used pelletizer machine, i am facing following problems.
1. Material is sticky for machine but stickiness is required for my material to bind properly otherwise they will break in water.
2. In pelletizer machine, it forms cylindrical lumps and then convert them into spherical pellets by rotation. I am getting less pellets and more powder.
Please suggest.
What is your binder and how much you use? 1% corn starch for hardwood pellets usually work (it is not necessary to use).
What is the moisture content of your material? You usually lose 1% of your moisture during the pelletizing, so your feedstock should be moister than you final product is (~7% --> 6%).
Pellet size can be important as well.
If your material is activated carbon type (like torrefied wood) you can still make pellets, even without a binder (I have seen that industrial size), the moisture content and remained lignin is the key.
