How effective and widely used are organic chlorides as paraffin inhibitors in waxy petroleum fluids? If no, why not? Three patents (EP0258179A1, EP0256979A1 and US4997580A) issued in the late 80s had claimed the Use of organic fluorochemical compounds with oleophobic and hydrophobic groups in crude oils as anti-deposition agents in waxy and asphaltenic oils. Curiously, aside these, the literature seems to be sparse on the use of such compounds as wax inhibitors. Some in fact report them as problematic for refineries while certain test protocols have been advanced for their detection and removal. However, they are believed to improve the extraction efficiency of crude oil. I would like to hear from those who have experimented or trialled these in the laboratory or field to learn about their experiences, observations and key takeaways for flow assurance. #flowassurance #petroleum #wax #organicchemistry #paraffinwax #paraffin #productionchemistry #oilfieldchemicals #inhibitors #viscosity
