As far as I experienced first author is s/he who worked and gave mostly the intellectual contribution, last author is the boss or an important honorary author or the person got the funds. However, this is not engraved on stone. Practically, the most influential person decides on the order but where a democratic beauty treatment is necessary the boss or the most authoritative guy is the last author.

The honest way of putting the proper order of the authors according to their contributions made is missing in many institutions. I would like to ask the peers here,
Does the order matter for an author in a publication and to what extent?
The first author shall be the researcher who initiated idea and actually devoted time for research & is also a corresponding author. The publication is identified by the name of first author (generally). The supervisor and other contributor can be ordered respectively.
I am not convinced to add the name of people who have not contributed anything in publication.
All authors must be given equal weight-age. first author writes the paper but rest of the authors make it perfect by contributing from their experience, Mostly first one less experienced than others.
Thank you all for your answers. I agree notably with Pr Andras Bozsik. So first author should be the main contributor, the last should be the research team head. For a paper from a PhD thesis, the supervisor was historically supposed to be the second author. Do you agree or think it s is now better to put the supervisor as last author? It seems that the new fashion is to put a significant author (like the supervisor) as last author... Heard about this fashion?
