We still live in the era of oil and gasoline powered or diesel powered (or more recently, ethanol powered) cars. We already have idea how should be the next generation of automobiles. But how will be the car for the intermediate phase?
I think it should be a car with electric traction, with batteries, with a small or micro internal combustion engine only to recharge the batteries.
I think it could be a car like today's electric cars, equipped with a gasoline engine with maybe 5 hp and a fuel tank with a capacity of perhaps 20 liters. Thus it would be possible to overcome the current limitation of autonomy of electric automobiles.
This suggestion is not accidentally simple. It is simple because the automotive industry is very slow to introduce effective changes.

Your idea is consistent with the concept of Extended Range Electric Vehicles (E-REV) that has been very popular in both academic and industrial field recently. It is able to solve the range anxiety issue due to the existence of the small engine. However, its performance is bad in high-speed application, because the engine is too small and the battery is almost depleted. If you enlarge the engine size, the cost will increase and also the fuel consumption. So i think a critical point to design a proper EREV is to design it according to consumers' need and application circumstances.

This speed issue could suggest a new and interesting question. In my opinion, a top speed of 100 km / h would still have another consequence: it would help reduce fatal accidents!
Yes i agree whit you the most, but not whit an ICE but whit micro turbines to high speed alternators is better it´s burn´s the hydrocarbons much more efficient.
There was a project on micro turbines in Sweden Volvo Aero, but is was shut down in 2005?! attachment.
Consider the present vehicle speed 75-80 km/h .
1. A better option will be decreasing the size of main source of energy i.e..ICE which in turn reduces the fuel consumption and increasing the size of APU (Auxiliary power unit) aka the electric motor .
2. Looking at the state of the art technologies of batteries , the future smart car should have a high efficient,robust and mechanically stable batteries which powers the electric motor / takes power from the generator [ Hybrid].

I agree with you. But what I will say now look amazing .... for our roads here in Brazil we can not travel at very high speeds. The infrastructure is poor. So I just have associated speed with accidents.

I don´t have exact info available now but i know there has bee a great progress in turbines blade material after 2005 so look it´s maybe on the market right now.
But one important thing is the nozzle (fuel injector) it must be in the burning chamber work in a temp around 700 degree Celsius or you must pre heat the fuel before you burn it otherwise you don´t get the energy savings compered to an ICE.
I've forgot to mention one important point in case of Hybrid traction ..i.e., Thermal design. Even micro turbine blade will be an option but the temperature rise as compared to typical ICE will be very high as mentioned by Mr.Bengt Seger . coming to electric motor, a robust design in terms of electrical ,mechanical ,materials and thermal is the present state of the art technology.
so the idea will be
1. ICE + battery + electric motor
2. ICE+battery +electric motor + PV panel [ cost effective]
suggestions are welcome
There are many alternatives to compose new designs for automobiles.
I proposed this question precisely because the automotive industry is very slow in introducing new products. Remember that some aircraft in World War II were already equipped with fuel injection, which became universal for cars only in the 90s.
I think we need to design an intermediate generation of autos!

There are countries which are blessed with sunshine in most of the year. I have this "simple" dream: the automobile to have energy-efficient, cheap, long-lived, and small-sized solar cells, installed above, which convert the solar energy to the electrical energy needed by the automobile with an ability to store electricity for further "few" hours during the night. At the same time, the automobile has the traditional internal combustion engine as a "spare" made of more plastics & less metals (thus lighter weight) occupying less volume.
In a sense, there is "hybridization" in a mixed fashion with more emphasis on electricity.
In my opinion, less speed of automobiles is a positive aspect in most cases. Yes high speed is required for ambulances & in races but most of the public can make do without "crazy" high speeds.
