For which heads can we skip pressure test and embed the spiral casing without water and pressure inside. Is this imposed by standards or choice of desighner? We are talking about francis turbines. My special case has approx. 40 m head and 60 m3/sec discharge.

- The hydrostatic test is for strength of structure and leaks and is important for test of concrete and spiral case. This book described some details: "An Introduction to Hydroelectric Power Systemsedited by J. Paul Guyer, P.E., R.A."
- The NPSH is also important and not just the head. For example, If the head be high but the velocity too much the same negative pressure and cavitation problem will accrue. The head is 40 m and the discharge is 60 m3/sec so from the graph of the chosen device it can be check that the selected device is ok or not (selection is depends on the Watt and discharge but the analysis is based on the efficiency of blades, velocity of water, head, ...).
- The Water Hammering effect also must be check.
