Well, both measure association between a binary outcome variable and a continuous or binary predictor variable. What is the basic difference between the odds ratio and the relative risk and when do we need to use each one of them?

The Odds Ratio is usually used in case control studies to determine the odds that a group with a disease was exposed to a risk factor. For example, if we need to calculate the odds that people with gastric cancer had H. pylori infection.
But the relative risk is usually used in cohort study to determine the risk of developping a disease in the exposed group compared to the risk in an unexposed group. For example, if we need compare the incidence of cholera in people who drink a particular fountain water versus people who did not drink it.
When the prevalence is low, OR is usually equal to RR.
