Hi, Friends. One of my student sow the seeds of Cicer and Lentil in the same environmental conditions and soil properties to find out the nitrogen fixation capacity. But, she found that there is no nodulation in the Cicer plant while Lentil shows good nodulation. What is the possible reason behind this?

I am not specialist at all of nodule symbioses, but my first guess would be that the modulating strains of (Rhizobium + others) present in your soil/inoculum do not have the (genetic) specificity determinants to nodule with Cicer. Another option is that the GxE (genotype x environment) interaction "space" is not for your Cicer interaction. This is very general answer. Did your Rhizobium inoculum happen to be check with Cicer in other environments / experiments ?
Very interesting question . How are you sure of purity of inoculants ..? If you are sure of these cultures . There could be two reasons, one could be the compatibility of crop-microbe synergy and another i suppose , Pseudomonas could ne antagonistically acting on efficacy of rhizobium, though by and large , both species compliment each othe rso mutualistically . These are just anticipations only , Dr Ashok Kumar.
Thanks to Mr. Yvan Rahbe and Dr. Srivastava for your valuable suggestions but there are some other facts related to the study which are
1. The inoculants of both Rhizobium and Phosphate solubilizing bacteria were procured from Microbiology Division IARI, New Delhi and the Rhizobium was specific for Chickpea as mentioned on the Packet.
2. Besides that there are certain native Rhizobia are present in the soil which helps in the formation of nodules in leguminous plants.
3. There is no nodulation even in the control (uninoculated) of Chickpea. Anoop Kumar Srivastava Yvan Rahbe
In this case , neither native rhizobium present in the soil , nor inoculated rhizobium is able to induce nodulation. In control also , no modulation was observed which suggests the ineffective native rhizobium rhizobium was present in the soil.And inoculated rhizobium was equally ineffective , what does it suggest ..??Shelf life of inculant casts a question mark. What was the soil condition, hope no salinity 9r calcium carbonate in the soil. This is one of the prime reasons why biofertilizers research has yet noy gained that distinction what it deserves for the reasons such as these...
