For a disinfection study, Monochloramine (NH2Cl) stock solution is prepared by dissolving ammonium hydroxide (NH2OH) (1M) solution in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (1M) and cooled to 0°C at an NH4: NaOCl mixing ratio of 3:1. Is the ratio of 3:1 is mole ratio or the mass ratio?

The reaction of ammonia and chlorine to produce NH2CL is 1 mole + 1 mole

NH3+ Cl2.

Therefore, 71 g Cl2 for 14 g of N = 5.07 mg Cl2 per mg N. In general, we dont use this theoretical ratio as we want to be sure that we have an excess NH4+ in the reaction. It is common to use mass ratios of 3:1 to 4:1. Therefore, your answer is the ratio of 3:1 is a mass ratio but be aware that excess NH4+ will be left unreacted in solution.
