I am in serious need of help. I am trying to use SPSS to find a correlation between Facebook usage and voting rates. In SPSS, I've coded "did not vote"=1 and "did vote"=2. Facebook usage is ranked from never, (1) to occasionally, (2) to often (3). What kind of analysis should I use for this? I would really appreciate a straight answer.
You should use Chi square test. It will provide you the association between these two variables.
The Chi-Square test of Independence is used to determine if there is a significant relationship between two nominal (categorical) variables. The frequency of one nominal variable is compared with different values of the second nominal variable. The data can be displayed in an R*C contingency table, where R is the row and C is the column.

I think Kendall's Tau might also be appropriate in this case (as the data is ordinal), but that is based on a memory from a long time ago - so may be best to ask a statistician. I am assuming that when you say 'ranked', you actually mean 'rated'.
To give you the straightforward answer you're asking for: if you would want to do the Chi-square test in SPSS, you go to analyze>descriptive statistics>crosstabs. There you include one of your variables in the rows, and the other one in the columns. Then click 'Statistics' and tick the box of the Chi-square. Continue>ok, and there you get the value (and significance test) of the Chi square test, showing whether there is a significant relationship between your two variables.
