Research excellence is a rare commodity these days. Of course, my statement deals with research papers within my fields but I think that it can be stretched to encompass other fields. What astonished me, many times, is the reiterated talk about the importance of the research done but upon completion of reading the papers, the quality of works has often been found to be far below expectations.
The emphasis, upon the number of research papers needed for "promotion", has resulted in a hasty rush of scholars to publish whatsoever to meet the requirements. This immature approach has caused a decline in academic quality with regard to research as well as teaching.
I am a retired senior lecturer who does not hunt for personal interests. I feel sad about what is going on in academic circles & I really doubt the continuous claims of excellence & high rankings. In my opinion, the graduates (of a given university) actually reflect its value.
