I need to make solutions of 6, 8 or 10 wt.% PVDF with the same amount of nanoparticles in dimethylformamide (DMF). The nanoparticle is Al2O3 coated with aluminic ester which is hydrophobic/oleophilic. After few hours of stirring the solution loses dispersion after just a few minutes. Sonication is also ineffective. What do you recommend?
We developed the ultra jet technology for nanosuspencion preparation, where suspension with a modifying agent are introduced into a high-speed, high-pressure jet in the ultrajet facility. The nanoparticles acquire the speed approaching that of the fluid jet (800 m/s) and are directed at the hard-alloy (WC) target. As a result of this intensive dynamic treatment, multiple disruptions occur over the surface of the liquid, creating a fine mist of micro- and nano-droplets of the original fluid medium. We have good results for the ultra jet dispersion of MWCNT in water suspensions. You can try this technology for your suspensions.

Prepare separate solutions: 1. PVDF mixed in NMP (6, 8, 10 %) and 2. nano-particles dispersed in NMP (6,8, 10%). Sonicate nanoparticle dispersion for 15-20 minutes followed by stirring for 15-20 min. Keep nanoparticle dispersion stirring and add PVDF solution drop-wise.
You can optimize sonication and stirring cycles till you get desired mixture.

Nanoparticles size is important here. the smaller the better to avoid phase separation by the gravity effect.
The second way is adding a functional group to the NPs for better dispersion and stability.
Nanoparticles diameter is 60 nm. For the mentioned polymer and solvent, is there any recommended fictionalization for the nanoparticles? BTW, NMP and non polar solvents like hexane and chloroform also does not work!
Particle size of 60 nm is too small...it will undergo agglomeration...you can try silane to functionalize nanoparticles.
