We have thousands, perhaps millions of connected things, the seemingly infinite tentacles of the IoT/Industrial IoT (IIoT) infrastructure, and floating above it all, the promise of the cloud.
Today, everything needs to be connected. Suddenly, there are gateways, edge devices, smart sensors, “dumb” sensors, end nodes—even local servers—all of which, to some degree, is tasked with collecting, aggregating, processing, and sending data.

Nice question! Really a challenging issue nowadays, especially when we take the security of IIoT into consideration. At present, I believe that the users would like to insulation their IoT from external networks since this is the best way to protect their system from malicious attacks.

to organize the cooperation of system components in IIoT (Industrial IoT), a very good system solution for Deterministic Networking is necessary. The TSCH (Time-Slotted Channel Hopping) concept largely meets these requirements.

Figure 8547 (Example of networking devices when using multiple TSMs) shows that a large Deterministic Network can be fragmented in IIoT.
The 6P (6top Protocol) concept is available to adapt a TSCH network to the requirements of communication between neighboring nodes in IIoT.
