Could someone help me identify some marine trace fossils? I usually work in terrestrial depositional environments and am therefore unfamiliar with the numerous trace fossils found in deep marine environments. I recently completed a reconnaissance of the Oligocene-Miocene Astoria Formation on the northern Oregon coast. The stratigraphic deep marine section that I am interested in has not been well studied, and the last study was completed over 50 years ago. I reviewed a few papers and hope I identified some of them correctly (see the attached PDF file). However, there are two trace fossils that I'd like someone to identify for me.
In the PDF file are a few photographs from the formation and the trace fossils. In particular, the ichnofossils on pages 6-7 and pages 14-18. The trace fossils on pages 6-7 are the only traces I found in what I assume to be a very deep marine micrite. On pages 14-18, these trace fossils appear unusually large compared to the associated ichnofossils shown in the presentation.
Please identify the genus/species, and if possible, provide an example of the animal that produced them. I am also interested in their bathymetry and preferred marine environment.
Many thanks,
Dean Richmond
